Why? Because Chester “Red” Wilson, a 63-year member of the Post, is a figure in the painting.
This year, Keith’s original painting portrays soldiers outside the old Blanchester train depot as they arrive home. Also included in the painting, in the lower right hand corner near where the artist signed his name, is one of Clinton County’s oldest veterans, the 89-year-old Wilson, observing the activity outside the depot and tipping his cap.
Wilson broke out in a big smile after the painting was unveiled and he saw to his surprise that he was portrayed in the piece of art.
As he did last year with his first painting in the series, Keith will donate this latest work to Blanchester ALIVE. It will be auctioned off about 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Blanchester Auction Center, with proceeds going to Blanchester ALIVE.
Last year’s painting by Keith, of the Bindley Building in downtown Blanchester, fetched $550 at auction.
Blanchester ALIVE’s aim, according to founding member Diana Miller, is to bring together local business owners and community members who share a vision of instilling new life and vitality into the Blanchester business community.
The painting by Keith, one of Clinton County’s finest visual artists currently creating, will be on display at the First National Bank of Blanchester starting Wednesday, Nov. 23.
Postcards as well as 13-by-19 inch prints of the painting will soon be available.
Wilson is a U.S. Army veteran who served in the 83rd Infantry Division during World War II. Milburn was installed by Past District Deputy Gary Cooper, Past Master Justin Gray Installing Marshal, Past Master Mike Hibbs, Installing Secretary and Past Master Mike Roever, Installing Chaplin. This 114th annual installation of officers was held November 17, at the Wilmington Masonic Center. Dalton Lodge has been serving Clinton County since 1898.
In his position as Master, Milburn is the presiding officer and head of the Lodge. The title of “Master,” instead of “President,” reflects the Masonic tradition of using ceremonies and titles from the stonemasons of the Middle Ages. When the great cathedrals of Europe were being built, the Mason in charge of a building site was referred to as a “master of the work.”
Other officers installed during the ceremony were Corey Pratt, Senior Warden, Mike Popson, Junior Warden, Gary Cooper, Treasurer, Mike Hibbs Secretary, Scott Baker, Senior Deacon, Paul Jellison, Junior Deacon, Dan Kennelly, Senior Steward, Mike Roever, Junior Steward, Gene Williams, Tyler and Douglas Cooper, Lodge Education Officer, and Don Williams Chaplain. The installing officers presented the Master the Jewel, Apron, Hat, and Gavel of his office. The incoming Master, Milburn presented the traditional Past Masters Apron to Mike Roever.
Preceding the installation the traditional Oyster Stew was enjoyed in the dinning room.
Freemasonry is the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized fraternal organization in the world. Today, there are more than 2 million Freemasons in North America alone. Charity is an important tenet of the Masonic fraternity. The 107,000 Freemasons in Ohio provide approximately $15 million in charitable giving annually. This year they gave $100,000 in college scholarships, contributed $200,000 to Special Olympics Ohio Summer Games, and funded $70,000 in free training for hundreds of Ohio school teachers to recognize students at non-academic risk. They also provided $12 million in elderly care, and helped many needy Ohio families and individuals through their Charitable Foundation. Posey, Grand Master of Ohio. From L to R Brother Bernard Lee, Worshipful Brother Bill Braun, Nancy Cooper, RWB Gary Cooper, Worshipful Brother Arnold Carlson. Not shown is Worshipful Brother Bruce Carson.

Recently, RWB Gary Cooper and his wife Nancy visited Lake Superior Lodge No. 349, located in Lakeside, a suburb of Duluth Minnesota. On Wednesday mornings the Lodge opens their doors to seniors for coffee. RW Cooper’s wife’s family has close ties to this Lodge and Minnesota Masons. Her grandfather, Frank Scobie Sr., was their Worshipful Master in 1926. Her great grandfather Henry Scobie, was a charter member of Trinity Lodge No 282 and her father, Frank Scobie Jr., was Past Master of Heath Lodge here in Ohio. WB Douglas Cooper of Dalton Lodge is a fifth generation Mason with deep Minnesota roots.

The Grand Lodge of Minnesota and the Grand Lodge of Ohio have a very significant relation ship. President Zackary Taylor had appointed Aaron Goodrich, chief Justice of the Territorial Court; Charles K. Smith, Territorial Secretary and Abraham Van Vorhes, Land Registrar of the Territory of Minnesota. They were all Masons and all arrived in St. Paul in 1849, along with James Goodhue, (with the first printing press in the territory) and Daniel Brawley, (trader and brick maker). All of this may sound familiar to Ohio Masons. On July 16, 1849, a meeting with thirteen present, was held at the American House, a two story frame hotel, to discuss the forming a Lodge. To secure more privacy the meeting was quickly moved to a log schoolhouse close by. This would be the foundation of the first Lodge in the Territory on Minnesota.

Charles K. Smith was a Past Master of Washington Lodge No 17, in Hamilton Ohio and was personally known to the Grand Master of Ohio. The following day at Smith’s office a petition addressed Grand Master Michael Z. Kreider, of Ohio, for a dispensation to form St. Paul Lodge. On August 8, 1849, a dispensation was granted and Smith was named as Worshipful Master, Daniel Brawley, SW, Wisconsin, and Lot Moffitt JW, New York.
Other members; Aaron Goodrich Tennessee, Justice Ramsey Pennsylvania, James Goodhue Wisconsin, Albert Titlow Wisconsin, Levi Sloan Iowa, and John Holland
Julius Airkenside, and W.C. Wright records lost.

St. Paul Lodge No 223 received its charter dated January 24, 1853. It was the third Lodge to receive a formal charter. St. John’s Lodge No 39, received their charter from Wisconsin, October 9, 1852 and Cataract Lodge No 121, from Illinois received their Charter October 5, 1852. The Grand Lodge of Minnesota was formed on February 23, 1853 .

Thank You Note From Gabrielle Moore

Thank you for the money that went to our college funds. L to R Right Worshipful Brother Walter "Butch" Peelle, Newly Installed Worshipful Master David Moore and Worshipful Brother C. J. Moore Treasurer

David Moore has been elected and installed as Worshipful Master of Dalton Masonic Lodge No. 578. David Moore was installed by Right Worshipful Walter “Butch” Peelle, Past District Deputy, Installing Marshal, C. J. Moore, Part Master Dalton Lodge, Right Worshipful Jeffery Thompson Past District Deputy, Installing Secretary and Right Worshipful Gary W. Cooper, Past District Deputy Installing Chaplin. This 112th annual installation of officers was held December 17, at the Wilmington Masonic Center. In his position as Master, Moore is the presiding officer and head of the Lodge. The title of “Worshipful Master,” instead of “President,” reflects the Masonic tradition of using ceremonies and titles from the stonemasons of the Middle Ages. When the great cathedrals of Europe were being built, the Mason in charge of a building site was referred to as a “master of the work.”
Other officers installed during the ceremony were Mike Roever, Senior Warden, Brian Shidaker, Junior Warden, C. Today, there are more than 2 million Freemasons in North America alone.
Charity is an important tenet of the Masonic fraternity. The 115,000 Freemasons in Ohio provide approximately $15 million in charitable giving annually. Our 110,000 members belong to over 500 lodges and the Grand Lodge of Ohio is the 2nd largest jurisdiction in the world. They include politicians, astronauts, police officers, firefighters, physicians, laborers and men of every walk of life, bound together by a sacred tie and having a deep sense of belonging to an organization much larger than themselves. Former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill said “All politics is local.” Similarly, all Masonry is local. Although the Grand Lodge grants charters to lodges and assures compliance with established regulations, most members are concerned with their local lodges. Local lodges are the lifeblood of Freemasonry in Ohio. Lodges throughout Ohio support local events, march in parades, grant scholarships, sponsor Little League teams and raise money for the Ohio Masonic Communities, the Special Olympics and the Grand Lodge Charitable Foundation. As Americans started the westward movement shortly after the forming of this Country, they built churches, schools and Masonic Lodges. Freemasonry has been a part of Ohio before Ohio became a State in 1803. Our Grand Lodge was formed shortly thereafter in 1808. Most of the early leaders in Ohio were active Freemasons. I urge you to review this website, to ask questions and to learn more about Freemasonry. If you are interested in joining a Masonic Lodge, you need only contact the webmaster, and he will refer you to a Lodge in your area. It is a good time to learn about Masonry and about our members.

May God’s richest blessings continue to support you and your family.

Terry W. This 111th annual installation of officers was held December 18, at the Wilmington Masonic Center.
In his position as Master, Gray is the presiding officer and head of the Lodge. The title of “Master,” instead of “President,” reflects the Masonic tradition of using ceremonies and titles from the stonemasons of the Middle Ages. When the great cathedrals of Europe were being built, the Mason in charge of a building site was referred to as a “master of the work.”
Other officers installed during the ceremony were David Moore, Senior Warden, Everett Stoops, Junior Warden, C. The Master’s wife, Lauren, presented a hat to her husband and a Gavel was presented by Mike Roever.
Following the Installation, Fifty Year Pins were presented to “Lee” Floyd Carey and Dexter White by family members. Keith Newton, District Deputy Grand Master, read their Proclamations and reflected on the past fifty years. A social hour was enjoyed in the dinning room following the ceremony.

Freemasonry is the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized fraternal organization in the world. Today, there are more than 2 million Freemasons in North America alone. Charity is an important tenet of the Masonic fraternity. The 110,000 Freemasons in Ohio provide approximately $15 million in charitable giving annually. This year they gave $85,000 in college scholarships, contributed $200,000 to Special Olympics Ohio Summer Games, and funded $70,000 in free training for hundreds of Ohio school teachers to recognize students at non-academic risk. They also provided $12 million in elderly care, and helped many needy Ohio families and individuals through their Charitable Foundation. A huge crowd was assembled for the dedication held on the Court House lawn. The theme for the memorial became the "letters to home" by veterans, families and friends. Dean Waddell introduced the the public officials: Mayor David Raizk, State Representative David Daniels, Senator John Carey, and Governor Ted Strickland. After the unveiling of the Memorial the National Anthem, 21-Gun Salute, and Taps were played. Dean told a story of a grandfather taking his grandson to the Vietnam Memorial and how quiet the area was. As they walked to the Korean War Memorial the grandson asked if the Korean Memorial was another whispering place? Dean said, "That this is truly a Whispering Place." He put a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. After closing, the crowd lingered for better than an hour! M.
Wilmington, Ohio, Formerly New Vienna, Ohio
Serving the Citizens of New Vienna, Clinton County, and the Surrounding Area

The Masonic Lodge at New Vienna, Ohio, dates back to 1847 when John E. Dalton and fourteen others petitioned the Grand Lodge of Ohio for dispensation to form a Lodge. Most Worshipful Brother Michael Z. Krieger granted the dispensation and on October 20, 1847. The first meeting was held at the residence of A. S. Amberg. The first line of officers was:

John E. Dalton Worshipful Master
A. S. Amberg Senior Warden
Jonathon Wright Junior Warden
Jonathon Hodson Senior Deacon
N. W. Cummings Junior Deacon
Clabourne Bennett Treasurer
Jessie Beals Secretary
Thomas Williams Tyler

On September 27, 1848, during Grand Lodge Communications, Most Worshipful Brother Michael Z. Kreider granted a Charter to New Vienna Lodge No. 160. The membership was 27 and within the first ten years the membership roll increased to 69.

In 1873, the Lodge added a second story to a building under construction, once sitting where the National Bank parking lot resides. The cost of the addition was $1, 350.00. During the 1850s, New Vienna Lodge No.160 and I. O. O. F. jointly founded the New Vienna Cemetery and in 1910 the I. O. O. F. assumed full control. Also in the 1880s the Lodge purchased a home in Russell Station for one of its member’s widow.

In 1867, members from New Vienna Lodge formed Martinsville Lodge No. 391.

On August 8, 1888, in Hillsboro, Ohio, one Marion D. Britton, member of New Vienna Lodge, shot and killed one John Brown. He was convicted and sent to the Ohio penitentiary. Many of the members thought he was insane. Un-Masonic charges were filed and a trial was held six years later on February 16, 1894. The vote was taken as to his guilt or innocence and resulted in the following: Guilty 19, Innocent 18. This incident so divided the Lodge that it was virtually impossible to conduct business.

After many bitter meetings the Grand Master, Nelson M. Williams, ordered WB Carey Clark to hold a special meeting. On August 5, 1898, the Grand Master presided over this meeting, which turned out to be the last meeting of New Vienna Lodge No. 160. The Grand Master revoked the New Vienna Lodge Charter.

Just two months later, October 20, at the Grand Lodge annual communications, Grand Master Williams issued a new charter to Dalton Lodge No. 578, New Vienna, Ohio. The first meeting was held on October 28, 1898, under the direction of Right Worshipful Samuel B. Evans, District Lecturer, and acting under a warrant from the Grand Master. The sole purpose of his presence was to constitute the new Lodge. Seven new petitions were read after a new Lodge was constituted.

On May 18, 1928, a motion was made to purchase the Knights of Pythias Hall for $1,250.00. The hall was not purchased until much later. On April 16, of 1942, WM J. Warren Terrell appointed a committee consisting of R. B. Smith, WB Glenn Southerland, and WB Homer Williams to purchase the Charter Oak K. of P. Hall. The committee reported in June, July, and August the same year and the Hall was purchased. Dalton Lodge met at this location through March of 1994. On April 15, 1994, Dalton moved their location to the Temple at Wilmington, Ohio. Dalton originally met on the third Friday, but on December 19, 1930, the meeting day was changed to the third Thursday and has not changed since.

Since the original Charter in 1898, Dalton Lodge has faithfully practiced the Tenets of Freemasonry, Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. Most predominately Relief, through charitable endeavors, Dalton Lodge has assisted widows of its members, individuals, community organizations, such as the fire department, PTO, local churches, Lions International, State and Clinton County Special Olympics, and Boy Scout Troop No. 97, just to name a few. Note that Dalton Lodge has chartered and sponsored Troop 97 BSA since 1987.

Dalton Lodge celebrated its One-Hundredth Anniversary on October 26, 1998. The Lodge has had one Grand Lodge Officer, Right Worshipful Brother Gary W. Cooper, District Deputy Grand Master 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Respectfully Submitted,
WB Gene Williams
Lodge Historian

Living Past Masters

Living Past Masters

Billy L.
